Rules for Safety
1. Always behave in a responsible manner when working in lab
2.No food or drinks in lab
3. No fooling around in the lab area
4. Keep work area clean at all times
5. Do not be careless
6. Keep hands away from eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals
7. Notify teacher of all hazards and injuries
8. Must always wear proper attire (glasses, apron, gloves, shoes, etc.)
Rules for When Dealing with...
-Lye: Be aware that lye is very corrosive and if it is every swallowed immediately rinse mouth with water and get medical attention. You should also call poison control center. If it gets into your eyes it is important that you flush them out with water.
-Hot Glassware: Use hot pads when carrying a hot glass.
-Soap handling: Soap can burn and irritate skin so it is best not to handle within 48 hours. If soap does come in contact with skin rinse skin thoroughly with vinegar and running water.
-Grease: Grease can cause clothes to catch on fire. DO NOT POUR WATER ON GREASE WHEN TRYING TO PUT OUT FIRE!!! (This will cause grease to spatter and could burn you or spread the fire.) Best way is to smother the flames with salt or baking soda. Another way is to place a fire blanket over any fire.
